Kindle shipment update 2

It has been more than twenty days since I got my shipment and I was still wondering how much I had to end up paying for Customs here in India. I finally decided to call up the DHL office and asked them how much I had to pay. So here is how much my Kindle finally worked out to:

Kindle 3: 6,500
Shipping: 1,000 (it took less than 3 days from dispatch to delivery)
Customs: 2,160
Total: 9,660

The figures above are in approximate INR.

I know this is high (the customs almost killed me) and could have been just below 7,000 had someone got it along for me. But I do not mind paying a premium for getting it two months or more early had I depended on someone else. And anyway it is still much cheaper than any other e-reader available in India. And undoubtedly the best there is.

  3. Aditya Kandala says:

You will not be charged. You will only be charged for any documents you get converted via their email service. I think they charge USD 2 for each conversion.

How much did you pay to amazon in dollars. I have read on a couple of indian tech forums that you get the refund directly from amazon after 2 months.

  5. Aditya Kandala says:

I paid USD 208. Yes, I will get the refund directly.

Hi Aditya, I need kindle to read the PDFs available on the web. can I download them through 3g direct to kindle and unzip and read them?

  9. Aditya Kandala says:

You can’t really download stuff off the net like you would in a Windows based system let alone unzip them. Maybe Amazon will include this in later updates (saving, not unzipping). However, you can transfer your PDFs as-is or convert them to MOBI and then transfer them through USB/Wifi/3G.

Hi AdityaJust wondering about the import duty story, a BONAFIDE gift less than Rs 10.000 in value could be allowed an exemption. If someone abroad paid using a foreign credit card and therefore used foreign currency to pay for the gift delivered in India i think no customs duty is applicable. Let me know what you think.

Dear Aditya, please let me know whether I should go for wifi or 3g. Am having a BSNL wireless broadband connection at home. Also for both what will be the net cost (including minimum accessories) in India. Hows the collection of free ebook in internet. Is it compatable with indian language also.

  13. Aditya Kandala says:

Hey Samrat,You can go for either one as long as you can afford the extra $ 50 that you pay for it. Any internet connection with WiFi connectivity is enough for the WiFi version. You won’t have to pay anything for 3G here. Its free worldwide. Free ebooks are limited to the popular books and classics. The Kindle is not yet compatible with Indian languages.

Hey Aditya,Have been bugging you for some days on this subject on Twitter (if you remember) but at the end of the day, just want to interact more with the person who is using Kindle. Anyways, what I wanted to ask is – I am very fond of a magazine called Open and I read its every issue from cover to cover. All I want that habit of mine to be possible on my future Kindle. You see I can very well browse it over the net when I am in some WiFi zone. But I won’t definitely be always inside a WiFi area no? So I was wondering that is there any way I can download all the articles to my Kindle and then read them when I am traveling or something. I am planning to buy a WiFi Kindle and not the 3G model. Just cannot fathom (and don’t want to) how a 3G would work in a Kindle any way (may be I will have to use a SIM card or something?). Awaiting your response. Thanks!Pulkit

  18. Aditya Kandala says:

You can load any magazines or books in its 4 GB memory and read it anytime you want to. You don’t need to be around an internet connection. The articles can be copied from your computer and read like a book. The 3G kindly already has a SIM in it. This enables it to browse the 3G network across the world for free. Though don’t expect very high speeds as the Kindle might not be able to process as fast.

Hi Aditya,I am looking forward for the release of Kindle Fire. I want to know few things about Kindle purchase from Amazon. Hey if I want to purchase a kindle do i need to have a credit card ? Soon I will be start preparing for my final PhD viva, do Kindle supports coping of PDF files from Computer through USB ? It is possible to know what is the amount of custom duty price in India? I am a researcher so want to do some research on Kindle Fire, it should be worth investing. Awaiting your response. Thank You Ashwini

  20. Aditya Kandala says:

Hi Ashwini,Really sorry for the late response. You will have to pay with a credit card. You can copy PDF files and read on your Kindle. It can also be converted to other formats. Customs is roughly around 25% of the gadget price. It is a good device if you plan on reading a lot. Hope I helped.
